The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has released numbers in its latest report that indicate a continued sharp rise in mobile phone subscriptions while prices of mobile phones themselves continue to fall around the world.
By the end of 2009 there were already 4.6 billion mobile subscribers representing 67 of Earth’s population and the ITC expects that that number will reach five billion by the end of 2010. Much of this number is recently represented by people in developing countries who are now able to afford the purchase price of a handset given the 25% drop in mobile phone price tags around the world. The ITC claims a 57% penetration rate in developing countries, a 24% increase over the same number in 2005.
The ITCs numbers are measured by ranking 159 counties in 11 different areas of their information and communication technology services.
