American FCC to Increase Wireless Broadband Spectrum

The American Federal Communications Commission has announced that, in an effort to improve wireless broadband in the United States, it will be seeking an additional 500MHz of spectrum over the next ten years. Doubling the currently available spectrum in those ten years will give mobile broadband in that country “the nourishments it needs to thrive” according to a quote from FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

While the FCC did not detail its plans, it is expected that some of the spectrum could be relinquished by television broadcasters, which possess about 300MHz of spectrum, voluntarily.
