Micro-USB European Charging Standard

micro USBWhile many manufacturers have yet to confirm the news, a Reuters story published on eWeek is suggesting that most of the major mobile handset makers around the world have agreed to adopt the micro-USB standard for all charging ports on all handsets sold within the European Union.

The report says that agreement has been confirmed from LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, NEC, RIM, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, paving the way for an easy transition and offering up even more reason to adopt the standard for smaller manufacturers.

No date has been set on this initiative but it’s worth noting that the Open Mobile Terminal Platform group of companies in the United States has been pushing for a similar adoption by 2012. Member companies in the OMTP include Orange, T-Mobile, ATT and Vodafone.
